Reviewing some Barrisol projects recently we found ourselves admiring two installations form the UK. We imagine, like us in Vancouver, BC, those in the UK must also hold light in high regard.​​

This month welcomes the Year of the Tiger. Did you know that in 2010 Barrisol Sydney installed two Barrisol Lunar Tigers in Australia for the Lunar New Year? Here are the details below, courtesy of Barrisol.com.

Barrisol Tigers - Australia

Customs House was the home for two 8mtr long by 2.5 mtr high Chinese Lanterns in the shape of a Tiger designed by LAVA and realized by Barrisol Sydney. These wire framed tigers were covered in our Barrisol "Orange Coulouma" and internally lit with the help from Sydney based lighting consultant "XENIAN" lighting – weighing only 200kg each. The crouching digital tigers combine ancient lantern making methods with cutting edge digital design and fabrication technology, bringing east and west together through tradition and innovation.

Since celebrating Chinese New Year in Sydney 2010, the tigers have been adopted by the World Wild Fund (WWF) for the international Year of the Tiger campaign to raise awareness about the endangered status of tigers. With the WWF the LAVA designed Barrisol Tigers have led a world tour, moving onto Kuala Lumpur and Berlin. Most recently the Tigers have been on tour in the USA tour as part of G'Day USA.

September marks the return of the school year so we wanted to feature one of our favorite Barrisol school installations.

Mulgrave School in West Vancouver features 14 suspended white triangular ceilings, 2 back lit leaf shaped ceilings, and 1 back lit round ceiling. The white triangular ceilings contain tiny micro perforations that turn sound waves into heat energy. Barrisol's micro-perforated fabrics are used to target adjust sound absorption and room reverberation time.

The printed and back lit Barrisol ceiling, at the ARC Vancouver, can be seen in the recent Dailyhive.com news article, "There's now a surreal 200-ft high, glass-bottom pool in downtown Vancouver", by Kenneth Chan.

Its architecture is based on a design and ecological concept. The architect Sauerbruch Hutton chose Barrisol Lumière® to light and enhance the exposed works of the XXth century among which the Andy Wahrol's famous paintings. Indeed, Barrisol Lumière® diffuses the light in a sweet and homogeneous way on the whole exhibition space. Furthermore, the Barrisol sheets are 100%, recyclable and are so perfectly adapted in this modern building turned to sustainable environment." - Courtesy of www.barrisol.ca.

To achieve even back lighting we recommend either florescent tubes (1 ft from the Barrisol ceiling membrane and 1 ft on center) or LEDs. When back lighting with LEDs the quantity and the spacing of the lights will need to be determined by the specific LEDs selected.
